When the Seasons Change....

It’s been a while since I last wrote here, but what better symbolic time to return than at the changing of the seasons? Over the last few years, since moving to the countryside, my awareness of the seasons — and the rhythms of nature — has deepened. That awareness has gradually woven itself back into my practice.

Here we are: the beginning of September. Summer is gently loosening its hold, and the familiar “back-to-school” feeling is in the air — that shift from the headiness of summer into something more grounded. For some of us sun-loving summer babies, this time of year brings a twinge of anxiety. I’ll admit: I find winter hard. But as much as we might resist it, we can’t escape the turning of the wheel. We can, however, flow with it.

And so, I’ve learned to look forward to autumn and all the beauty it brings: ruby and umber leaves crunching underfoot, golden light spilling across shorter days, and the chance to savour these last sweet moments of summer. There’s something comforting too about greeting old friends — cosy jumpers, steaming mugs, Sunday board games (okay, maybe I’m romanticising — but you get the picture!).

Back on the mat, September offers us a similar invitation: to ground, to settle, and to take stock. Autumn is the season of harvest — reaping the fruits of our work so far and deciding with intention how we’d like the rest of the year to unfold.

In practice, this means drawing inward: steadying ourselves with forward folds, opening the hips, rooting down through the legs and feet. We connect to the earth, to stability, to home — not just in our houses, but in our bodies.

In my classes this season, expect grounding forward folds, delicious hip-openers, and balancing postures that remind us of the safety and steadiness we can always return to. Want to practice with me?
