Sthira Sukham Asanam. Steadiness and ease in the posture.

If you managed to get down to my classes this week, you know we’ve been exploring what it might mean to find both steadiness and ease in our practice. And that doesn’t mean the practice has to be easy. There are, of course, practices designed to feel slow and restful.

Postures where we’re supported by bolsters and blankets and invited to soften and drop into the ground. (Although, as anyone with a particularly busy mind will know, an easeful practice for the body can sometimes feel absolutely torturous for the brain. )But what if there’s another way of interpreting “steadiness and ease”?What if it’s also about learning how to find some steadiness and ease when the thing itself is difficult?

Take our little friend Utkatasana (Chair Pose)...

Unless you are A) a masochist or B) doing something rather different to the rest of us, Chair Pose is probably never going to feel easy.It is, quite literally, designed to challenge us.The thighs start burning. The heart rate creeps up. We have to hold ourselves. And somewhere in the middle of it, the brain might start shouting:

I can’t. I can’t. I can’t.

And perhaps this is where the practice really begins.

Can we stay steady?

Can we soften something that doesn’t need to be gripping?

Can we breathe?

And gradually, perhaps that inner voice changes from I can’t to…

Okay. Maybe I can.

And maybe, one day, it becomes:

I can be here, in this moment, knowing that this too shall pass.

Because if we can practise meeting discomfort without immediately fighting it, fleeing from it or deciding we simply cannot cope with it, perhaps we have a slightly better shot at approaching life, with a little more steadiness and ease too...or in other words, what we practice in class, can be added to our life survival toolkit.

If you fancy exploring Sthira Sukham Asanam with me, there’s still one final chance to practise together this week:
